A Healthier You: Combating Aging Skin by Lauren, Esthetician at Cooper Spa
How to Combat Aging Skin and Look Younger
We use to think sagging skin due to aging was all about gravity. You might have heard the saying over and over of “gravity was not good to me” or “gravity will take over in your 50’s”. In the medical field, the recommended procedure for this “gravity effect” was a rhytidectomy or face lift to tighten the skin. Their idea to reduce the aging look was to remove fat deposits and to pull the skin tighter to reduce wrinkles. Little did we know its all about the fat!
We have learned that as we age, gravity actually has nothing to do with the way our skin looks. It’s all about volume. Think of a balloon all blown up and full of helium. It’s perfectly round and smooth with no indentations. No wrinkly of the outer appearance, but as the helium starts to deflate over time it starts to sag and shrivel. The balloon is losing its volume, and when this balloon loses its volume, light cast on the balloon starts to create shadows and makes the creases look larger and more predominate. This same concept is happening with our bodies as we age. We start to “lose our helium” and the surrounding light pushes down on us and creates shadows in our skin.
Today we have a major break through in the field of medical ascetics. We have learned the secret to youth is volume and fat deposits in the face. We have graduated to treatments as fillers, botox or laser procedures to produce more cells and collagen. Plumping the skin accurately can change the look of aging and soften the lines and wrinkles.
But what kind of steps can you do at home that to improve your skin and look more youthful? As a professional esthetician, there are several key things I recommend to my clients to keep their skin healthy and more vibrant and I’m happy to share them with you so you can do these things for yourself at home!
Water is the #1 Beauty Secret!
Water is the best beauty treatment and secret. By drinking water, you moisture your skin from within or the inside out. As our skin is made up of approximately 20% water, it will wrinkle faster without adequate moisture. Just like a plant, when the skin loses moisture, it gets dry. Dry skin shows wrinkles more and causes skin to sag faster than it would normally losing volume. Skin that is becoming saggy is either due to aging or weight loss. Water will plump up cells nicely when the skin cells are hydrated. Hydrated skin looks younger and youthful by decreasing signs of fatigue.
Challenge your self to the Water Challenge! Drink 3 liters a day for 4 weeks and watch the skin plump right back to normal state. You can do it! Don’t forget your before and after pictures!

Blueberries for Antioxidants!
This low-profile berry was ranked number one in antioxidant activity by the U.S. Department of Agriculture compared to 40 common fruits and vegetables. The antioxidants in blueberries protect you from premature aging, so add half a cup to your yogurt or cereal every day! Eating blueberries is delicious and great for your skin.

By harnessing the active nutrients of blueberry and soy milk, this product aids your body’s processes in repairing and renewing your skin. It is also gluten-free and vegan! I recommend this product to my own clients and believe you will experience similar great results. Beauty Sleep is Real!
If you lose sleep, it shows in your face. Tired skin sags, bags, and loses volume. Lack of sleep causes blood vessels to dilate and creates the look of dark circles. While we sleep, your skin renews itself. New skin cells grow and replace older cells.
You should get 7 to 9 hours of good sleep each and every night. You should also avoid over sleeping, as over sleeping can actually increase cell breakdown. Don’t forget to catch some Zzzz’s!
